[Description] Where is Bandar Lampung?

Describing location can puzzle me sometimes. What do you think of these 'patterns'?

Where's A?
It's     near B
It's     in C
It's     on the     river X
It's     on the     coast of Y
It's xx km     south     of Z
It's xx km     north     of Z
It's in     East Java
It's in     the east of West Java
It's east of Java

First time I read those patterns, my first reaction was 'HUH?!?!'. Some of them were confusing for me. Thanks to my friends, I've got better understanding now. So, let me try to describe the location of my home town based on those patterns.

Where is Bandar Lampung?

It’s in Lampung Province. Bandar Lampung as a part of Lampung Province.
It’s in the south of Lampung. Bandar Lampung is located in the south part of Lampung (note: south of Lampung = south part of Lampung; South Lampung = one of regencies in Lampung)
It’s on the coast of Lampung. Coast = land beside the sea.
It’s south of Palembang. Bandar Lampung is not the part of Palembang. We can say, if you're in Palembang and you want to go to Bandar Lampung, you have to go to the south.
It’s 290 km south of Palembang. Almost similar with the previous description. But, based on this description, you find out that Palembang and Bandar Lampung are 290 km away.

It's in Lampung Province = Bandar Lampung (terletak) di Provinsi Lampung (bagian dari Provinsi Lampung.
It's in the south of Lampung = terletak di Lampung bagian selatan (catt: BUKAN/BERBEDA dengan terletak di Kabupaten Lampung Selatan).
It's on the coast of Lampung = terletak di bagian pesisir Lampung.
It's south of Palembang = terletak di sebelah selatan Palembang (BUKAN di Palembang bagian selatan).
It's 290 km south of Palembang = terletak (berjarak) 290 km  sebelah selatan Palembang.

I tried my best to give brief explanation. I hope it's useful.

[Picture] Mutun Beach, December 30, 2010

Mutun Beach is one of the most visited beaches in Lampung. Since it's holiday season, no wonder there were many people when I went to this beach. Fortunately, the beach wasn't too crowded. It's nice to see that this beach is cleaner now and more well maintained. But don't worry, if you want to visit this beach next time you still only have to pay 10,000 IDR per person and 5,000 IDR per car. But you have to pay about 30,000 IDR to rent the hut.

If you want to go to Tangkil island, you can take the water taxi (hehe, I saw this written on one of the boats). I paid 50,000 IDR for five people, but maybe it's depend on the size of the boat ~ and how you bargain of course. But don't be too harsh to the boat owners, OK? They're trying to fulfil the daily needs too.

You can ride the banana boat ~ I asked my Mom to ride it, she didn't want to. Kids, you can have fun sliding on the water boom! But don't forget the life jacket. If you're looking for a place to change your clothes after swimming, don't worry... We've got clean changing rooms now, but be patient if there are many people who want to use them too. Last but not least, keep the beach clean.

[Travelling] Wanted! A Green Hideaway for Holiday!

How are you my friends? Are you spending your holiday now? If some of you manage to take few days leave from your work and be able to spend your holiday outside Bandar Lampung, lucky you. But if you still have to work or can't spend your time to find a hideaway outside Bandar Lampung, welcome to the club. Honestly, I've got 4 more days off before I have to think about my schedule and examinations, so let's try to have a not too boring holiday hehe.

If I have to spend my holiday, I prefer being surrounded by a natural environment. Going to the malls is fun, but it takes lots of money :P. Natural environment with green views, fresh air, breezy wind is what I need to feel relax.

When I'm in the mood of something green for my holiday (and it has to be around Bandar Lampung), I think about these places:

Kampung Wisata Tabek Indah

Tabek Indah is one of the entertainment or recreational objects in Lampung with complete facilities. Tabek Indah is located in Natar, about 8 km from downtown. It takes about 30 minutes to get there. This place is perfect for a short vacation with our family or friends. My first impression about this place, it's quiet, peaceful and clean. Perhaps because when I visited Tabek Indah, there weren't many people except some people from one of provider telecommunication companies in Indonesia having a gathering or something like that. But in my opinion, this place is indeed peaceful. It's comfortable and surrounded by trees. Read more...

Taman Wisata Lembah Hijau

Lembah Hijau is one of the mainstay of natural attractions in Bandar Lampung. Lembah Hijau is located on Jl. Raden Imba Kesuma Ratu, Tanjung Karang Barat, Bandar Lampung. It’s a composition of recreational park and a mini zoo located in a hilly area. But, I believe the most attractive facility in this site is the water boom. Read more... Pictures...

Taman Wisata Bumi Kedaton

Taman Wisata Bumi Kedaton (Bumi Kedaton Park) is located seven kilometers from the center of Bandar Lampung, precisely in Batuputu, Teluk Betung Barat. It's a cool temperate area famous for the fresh fruits. We can feel the forest atmosphere on both sides of the road to this park. In this park some facilities are also available such as traditional house of Lampung, cottages with panoramic valleys and hills perfect for relaxing, and outbound area. The park is also crossed by a river with clean and cool water. Read more... Pictures...

Walking around these recreational sites is quiet fun because it means I can work out and enjoy the green view at the same time. Even though I'm sure that these places will be more crowded during the holiday season, for me it's OK. But, if you have another suggestion for me about a natural recreational site to visit, just let me know. Just remember, the place has to be around Bandar Lampung :D... Have a nice holiday!

[Travelling] Taman Wisata Bumi Kedaton, Lampung

This park is more like a zoo since it has got a number of animals such as yellow-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita), hornbills (Buceros rhinoceros), porcupines (Hystrix brachyura), gibbons (Hylobates syndactylus), cassowary (Casuarius casuarius), sun bears (Helarctos malayanus), estuarine crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus), peacocks (Pavo cristatus, various types of snakes, etc. However, in this park some facilities are also available such as traditional house of Lampung, cottages with panoramic valleys and hills perfect for relaxing, and outbond area. The park is also crossed by a river with clean and cool water.

The visitors of Taman Wisata Bumi Kedaton are mostly families and students. Usually, this place is more crowded with visitors on Sundays or holidays.

[History] Raden Intan II, the National Hero

Raden Intan II was one of the national heroes from Lampung Province who led people of Lampung in bearing arms against Dutch colonialism. Raden Intan II was born in 1831. He was the son of Radin Imba II and grandson of Raden Intan I. Raden Intan I was one of Fatahillah descendants - spreader of Islam in Banten around XVI century. Fatahillah married to Princess Sinar Alam of Lampung.

Lampung was one of the areas that have the effect power from Banten since before the Dutch arrived. Since Lampung was rich of spices, the Dutch had the desire to gain control of Lampung. But the arrival of the Dutch in Lampung was welcomed by people of Lampung's resistance.

Resistance to the Dutch first led by Raden Intan I. Raden Intan I (1751 - 1828) was the ruler of Keratuan Darah Putih or Negara Ratu, based in Kahuripan (now Penengahan, South Lampung). For the Dutch, Raden Intan I regarded as a stubborn person. He tended to resist any policy made by the Dutch government, such as the monopoly of pepper trade.

The power of Keratuan Darah Putih led by Raden Intan I was recognized by the Governor-General of the Dutch, H.W. Deandels. This attitude was intentionally shown by the Dutch government. However, Raden Intan I took the steps considered very dangerous for the Dutch, such as building a friendship with Daeng Gajah of Tulang Bawang and Seputih. Raden Intan I was deliberately broke away from the relationship with the Dutch. The Dutch became aware and held a negotiation with Raden Intan I. This action was meant to strengthen the Dutch's position in Lampung. The contents of the agreements were:
1. Raden Intan I was willing to end violence and help the Dutch government.
2. Raden Intan I's position would be recognized by the Dutch government.
3. Raden Intan I would get a pension of 1,200 Gulden per year and his family would get 600 Gulden per year each.

The agreement created a peaceful atmosphere. But the peace didn't last long because the Dutch was unilaterally violated the agreement and blatantly took violent actions.

In early December 1825, the Dutch government sent a delegation to arrest Raden Intan I. However, Raden Intan I's troops attacked them and the Dutch people were overpowered. With the defeat,, Lampung state was back to normal for a while. Three years later, Raden Intan I got sick and passed away. The throne of Keratuan Darah Putih then passed to his son, Raden Imba II.

Raden Imba II, who inherited the throne, also inherited his father's personality which was anti Dutch colonialism. He established relationship with Sultan Lingga, and also with Bugis and Sulu sailors. It triggered the Dutch's awareness. They feared that Raden Imba II was preparing an army to attack the Dutch.

Apparently, the Dutch's allegation was correct, Raden Imba II with the help of local people attacked Lampung Bay (Teluk Lampung). He successfully defeated the Dutch. The Dutch suffered a great loss. Assistant Residence of the Dutch, J.A. Du Bois asked for reinforcement from Batavia. Troops from Batavia landed in Kalianda, August 8, 1832. However, Raden Imba II had left his hideout.

The battle against the Dutch once again occurred on September 9, 1932 in the area of Mount Tanggamus. But once more, Raden Imba II gained a victory. Finally, the Dutch troops led by Captain Hoffman exerted greater force. A great battle was occurred at Fort Raja Gepei. Both sides suffered great loss, but Fort Raja Gepei could be defended.

September 23, 1834, the Dutch government in Batavia sent bigger amount of troops. They destroyed and occupied the fort, but Raden Imba II managed to escape and asked for protection from Sultan of Lingga. Unfortunately, his hiding place was known and Raden Lingga was forced to extradite Raden Imbba II due to the pressure from the Dutch.

Raden Imba II finally exiled to Timor Island and passed away there. Meanwhile, his pregnant wife Ratu Mas returned to Lampung. With the death of Raden Imba II, Lampung was entirely under the power of the Dutch. For about 15 years, there weren't any uprisings in Lampung.

Ratu Mas gave birth to a son named Raden Intan II. He followed his ancestors' track being anti-colonialism. In 1850, 15 years old Raden Intan II inherited the throne of Keratuan Darah Putih. He began to repair the damaged forts and build new forts such as Fort Galah Tanah, Pematang Sentok, Kahuripan, and Salaitahunan. Defense centered in Mount Rajabasa since it's a strategic location, surrounded by several forts such as Fort Raja Gepei Cempaka and Kahuripan Lama.

Raden Intan II also built friendships with some important figures such as Singabranta, Wak Maas, Haji Wakhia, and people people of Marga Ratu and Dataran. The Dutch finally took an action, they tried to persuade Raden Intan II in exchange for forgiveness, tuition fees, and others. However, Raden Intan II rejected any kinds of persuasion.

In 1851, the Dutch sent troops to invade Fort Merambung, but they were failed. In 1953, the Dutch once again proposed a peace treaty. The proposal was accepted by Raden Intan II. But in 1856, Raden Intan II once again attacked the Dutch.

The Dutch troops in Lampung finally asked for help from Batavia. In 1856, a helping hand came under the command of Colonel Walleson and seized Sikepal Island (Teluk Tanjung Tua area). The Dutch then gave Raden Intan II and his companions an ultimatum to surrender.

From Sikepal Island, the Dutch troops prepared to attack the forts built by Raden Intan II. One by one the forts were seized by the Dutch troops. August 27, 1856 the Dutch attacked Fort Katimbang. Because firepower differences, Fort Katimbang was successfully seized buy the Dutch. Raden Intan II and his companions managed to escape.

Raden Intan II and his companions moved from one hideout to another. Frustrated Dutch decided to blindly caught Raden Intan II and his companion's family. Kiai Wakhia was captured by the Dutch and executed on September 9, 1856. In the next battle, Wak Maas was killed. Over time, finally Raden Intan II struggled alone.

Because it was difficult for the Dutch to capture Raden Intan II, they ended up doing tricks. The Dutch managed to persuade the Head of Kampung Tataan Udik, Raden Ngarupat, to deceive Raden Intan II by inviting him to dinner. October 5, 1856, Raden Intan II was ambushed by the Dutch troops in Raden Ngarupat's house. He immediately fought against the troops. But because of the power imbalance, finally Raden Intan II died. Raden Intan II was really a hero who fought against the Dutch colonialism until the end.

My Dad used to work in Education Department of Lampung Province, Museum and History Div. My father told me that he heard from someone who's a historian of Lampung... Raden Intan II once asked his mother "What's the remedy of shame, Mother?" "Dead!" replied his mother. Raden Intan II felt humiliated by the colonizers. He struggled until the end against the Dutch colonialism.

[Travelling] Klara Beach, Lampung

Last week I went to the beach again. After my morning stop at the natural hot water bath in Natar, suddenly I had an idea to find a place for a picnic lunch. So I drove to the Navy Base Camp in Padang Cermin. Near the base camp, there is a beach known as Klara Beach or Pantai Klara.

Klara Beach is located about 35 kilometers from Bandar Lampung. It took about 1 hour and 30 minutes to drive from Natar to the beach. But it took only 1 hour to drive from Klara Beach back to Bandar Lampung. On the road, sometimes it felt like climbing the mountain through the valley but it was pretty fun because I could see the green scenery on either side of the road. But be careful, don’t speed along the journey. It’s very dangerous.

At first, I thought the name of the beach was ‘Clara Beach’ – a very cool name. Apparently, it’s not ‘Clara’ but ‘Klara’ – the short version of Kelapa Rapat. Naturally, it’s because there many coconut trees or pohon kelapa on this beach, growing in adjacent distance. There are also quite a lot spade trees or pohon waru. But honestly, it’ll be less cool if we name the beach Wara Beach or Pantai Wara – Waru Rapat huh?

Klara Beach is located on the left side of the main road. Seems like, there are two entrances. I chose the second entrance because it’s got wider surrounding coastal area for parking the car. Meanwhile, around the first entrance there were too many coconut trees. Somewhat, it’s difficult to park the car.

The entrance fee is quite cheap, really. It’s only 20,000 dollars, ups I mead 20,000 IDR per car. I also rented a hut and I only had to pay 20,000 IDR. As in other beaches, we can find life buoys rentals here. I’ve had enough playing water at the natural hot water bath, so after I had my lunch, I only walked through the beach and took some pictures. I found some jellyfish that washed up dead. Unfortunately, I didn’t see Spongebob, Patrick, or Mr. Crab here.

The sea water on Klara Beach doesn’t seem as clear as on Mutun Beach. But honestly, I prefer the atmosphere on this beach since it’s not too crowded. It feels more comfortable. Once satisfied with a walk, I returned to the hut. It was fun to be able to lie down inside the hut, under the coconut trees, accompanied by the sound of the waves and the breezy wind. It will be very nice to take a nap with such an atmosphere like this everyday, isn’t it?

Finally, at 1 P.M. I got ready to return to Bandar Lampung. As usual, when I arrived at the intersection in Pasar Kota Karang, Teluk Betung, I was welcomed by traffic jam. Welcome to the stuffy atmosphere of the city. Strangely, I didn’t feel tired at all. Usually all I wanted to see were my bed, pillows, and bolsters after such a long trip. Hmm… perhaps it’s the influence of the hot water bath and the quiet beach. Back to nature indeed the best cure and entertainment after hectic weekdays.

[Travelling] Taman Wisata Lembah Hijau, Lampung

Few months ago I took my nieces to the most popular recreational object in the city. I believe most of Bandar Lampung residents have been here.  This tourism object is mainstay of natural attraction in Bandar Lampung. Lembah Hijau is located on Jl. Raden Imba Kesuma Ratu, Tanjung Karang Barat, Bandar Lampung. It’s a composition of recreational park and a mini zoo located in a hilly area, with valleys and a small river.

As a tourist attraction that is close to downtown, Lembah Hijau indeed can be categorized as a complete tourist site. Entry rate is affordable, 10,000 IDR. Here, we can see the collections of flora and fauna, do horseback riding, and go camping. Lembah Hijau is completed with outbound arena, paintball and air soft gun area, racing and also futsal arena. We can also enjoy a meal in the restaurant and stay in cottages that are available.

But the most attractive facility for visitors, especially kids, is the water boom. To get into the water boom area, every visitor has to pay 20,000 IDR. The water boom is equipped with a 13 meters high and 60 meters long spiral tower, a water splash, and a water canon. Naturally, it’s hard to persuade the kids to go home because they enjoy playing in the water boom so much. I’ll go back to this place again someday. Maybe I’ll try to ride the ATV and crazy motorcycle in the racing arena haha – dreaming.

[Travelling] Mutun Beach, Lampung

Beach is a favorite tourism objects in Lampung. Sunday or holidays, the beaches in the vicinity of Bandar Lampung is usually full of visitors. Mutun Beach is one of the most visited beaches in Lampung. No wonder, because the distance is relatively close to the capital city, Bandar Lampung. Approximately, it took only 30 minutes to go there.

The beach itself is located on the left side of the main road. From the main road, we need to drive or ride about 1 km to get there. Last time I visited the beach, there were two alternative paths. The first path was shorter but the condition wasn't very good. It was a bumpy dirt road. The second path was further but the condition was better. But still, we need to be careful. There were holes on the paved road.

The cost of entry to this beach is affordable. It's about 10,000 - 20,000 IDR. On the beach itself, there are many huts available to be rented. We need to pay about 30,000 to 100,000 IDR. If you visit the beach during the holiday season, get ready mentally to bid. Usually the owners of those huts tide high tariffs.

There are some activities we can do besides swimming here. We can take a walk, ride kayak, boat, or banana boat. Some people said that we can do snorkeling here, but I haven't tried it yet - nor that I can do it hehe. We can also cross the sea to Tangkil Island, not too far from the beach. I don't remember how much to pay to ride a boat there. Surely we must be smart to bargain here.

My advice, better come here in the morning so you can enjoy the quiet beach atmosphere. Don't try to come here during Idul Fitri holiday. The route to Mutun is usually jammed and the beach itself is crowded. Relax, there are many beaches in Lampung to be visited. We've got many beautiful beaches here!

[Travelling] Kampung Wisata Tabek Indah Lampung

Tabek Indah is one of the entertainment or recreational objects in Lampung with complete facilities. Tabek Indah is located in Natar, about 8 km from downtown. It takes about 30 minutes to get there. But in my opinion, this place is indeed peaceful. It's comfortable and surrounded by trees.

The management provides some sort of huts and camping ground for us to relax. In addition, various other facilities are also available in Tabek Indah such as: place of worship (musholla), swimming pool with waterslide and waterfall, waterboom, cottages, outbound arena (with flying fox, spider web, burma bridge, and paint ball), adventure play garden for children, restaurant and cafe, and and fishing ponds.

The last time I visited this place, I took some pictures around the hut I occupied. Honestly, I didn't do many activities. I just walked around and took pictures. I was in the mood for something green (trees, grass). After that, I had lunch with my family (it's no problem to bring our own food and drink but don't forget to keep the place clean) and took a short nap hehe. Seems like I'll visit this place again someday with my friends, perhaps I'll be able to shoot them with paint ball haha.
